988 Crisis Lifeline

Riverside University Behavioral Health (RUBH) Presentation

988 is: A Transformative Movement for the Crisis Care System In 2020 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated 988 as the new 3-digit number for suicide prevention and mental health crises. In 2020 the National Hotline Designation Act was also signed into law, solidifying the national commitment to transforming crisis services and incorporating 988 as the new Lifeline and VCL number. In 2021 the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), Veteran’s Affairs (VA), and the FCC submitted multiple reports to Congress regarding the implementation of 988. A funding opportunity for 988 at the state level was also released in 2021 allowing states to submit planning grants to receive funding for the rollout of 988 in their specific state. As many of you are already aware, we began the soft launch of 988 on July 16, 2022!
